About Thailand

Thailand is a tropical country made up of rolling hills in the north and an abundance of islands in the south.  Sunny year round, Thailand experiences monsoon rains from July to October.

Thailand is a predominately Buddhist country, though every major religion has some presence.  Thai culture prides itself on hospitality and friendliness, and as evidence that others agree, the country is often referred to as The Land of Smiles.  In general, Thailand has a reputation as a peaceful country.

Thailand is a democracy, but has a Royal family.  Reverence for the king, who is technically not supposed to be involved in politics, is apparent in everyday life.   King Bhumibol Adulyadej is presently the world’s longest-serving head of state.  He has also held the reign longer than any other king in Thai history.

Thailand is one of the few countries in Asia that was never colonized by a European power.   Because every one of its neighboring countries was colonized, Thais take great pride in the fact that they have always remained a sovereign state.

Medical Tourism in Thailand

Thailand is a premier destination for medical tourists.  Patients travel from all over the world to receive treatment in Thailand.  Though it is impossible to calculate the exact number of medical tourists visiting Thailand each year, the British news source, The Guardian, reported that over 1.6 million foreigners are treated in Thai hospitals every year.

Patients come to Thailand for a variety of different kinds of treatments covering bariatric, cosmetic, and plastic surgery as well as dental treatment.  The reasons so many foreigners go to Thailand each year for treatment are varied, but typically the most evident driving factor is to save money without compromising quality.  Patients can save anywhere from 20-70% on their medical expenditure even after including travel costs.  Further, Thailand is known for having some of the best hospitals in the world.

It is projected that medical tourism in Thailand is a growing industry. As more westerners search for affordable, quality healthcare options, Thailand will remain a premier destination.
